Should police abandon chasing cars if they drive dangerously?

BBC News - Pensioner killed by stolen car after Hayes police chase

Pensioner killed by stolen car after Hayes police chase

The car was reported at 18:53 GMT, and police abandoned the chase five minutes later. The man was hit at 19:02 GMT.

The police vehicle abandoned the chase at 18:58 GMT after it also hit the stationary Vauxhall Zafira. No-one was injured in the incident.

Seems to me to be a good reason for the police to keep following.

It's a difficult one, what are the alternatives after all they're going to be chasing them for a reason, it's a pity they don't have some type of cannon that they can use to disable the vehicle they're chasing some kind of EMP weapon mwahahahahaha!

Or even a manufacturer installed engine management override that just switches off the engine.

The greater use of police helicopters mean that TPAC (Tactical Purist and Containment) can stay at a safer distance to minimize the risk of a driver doing something really stupid

give it a few more years and the Police should have cost effective drone aircraft they can launch instead of persuing by car
