How can they detect buckyball molecules light years away, etc, and measure the distance across the earth to a fraction of a millimetre, but not tell if a bloody great rock will hit us?

They reckon they will get a better fix on it's trajectory in 2023 when it makes a close approach to the Earth. Even then it will have about another 13 orbits to complete about the Sun before its closest approach to the Earth, so it'll be in interesting to see how close a fix they'll manage then.

It will after our failed attempt to ensure it doesn't hit.
