Monday Links from the Science Park vol. CXVI

Lovely weather for the time of year However, never mind that: keep your complexion pasty by staying in a gloomy room and reading stuff on t'Internet instead:
    • The 10 Signs You May be Turning Into Your Mother - "One of the key relationship moments for any woman though is when, in the middle of a heated exchange, she first hears the words, 'You're turning into your MOTHER.'... But, heaven forfend, what if it's true?" In honour of yesterday's Mothering Sunday, Shelagh McKinley lists the signs to watch out for.

    • What They Knew - "Here are 366 Interesting things that we know because of FOI requests made using WhatDoTheyKnow.com – one for every day of the leap year. This list focuses mainly on information released during the last six months." All kinds of interesting things, from The Knowledge (as in, what London cabbies have to learn), through Chinese terms for British government officials (huh?), to the national register of cranes

    • Housed - "Is homeownership, despite three presidents’ best efforts, out of reach for the sinking middle-class? Good riddance, says one former homeowner." Aimee Phan recounts her experience of buying and losing a home in the collapse of the US housing market.

    • John Stuart Mill And The Dangers Of Silencing - "John Stuart Mill's argument against silencing dissent highlights important reasons we should never silence any view or idea, because of mere outrage or offence." Excellent article by Tauriq Moosa on the Against the New Taboo blog.

    • 35mm Stock Footage - "Internet Archive's 35mm stock footage collection consists of material especially shot for stock footage purposes as well as feature film outtakes and unused material that were conserved for future use in other productions. Rights to this collection are held by Internet Archive. You may download and reuse material under the Creative Commons Attribution License." Extensive collection of material under numerous categories, such as "Airplane Crashes and Flooding River Special Effects" and "Rubber Tree and Unknown Aerials".

    • Tim Morgan's answer to "What do all the controls in an airplane cockpit do?" - "All of them? If you're talking about a commercial airliner, then there's hundreds and hundreds. There are big, fat manuals describing what they all do. But, since you asked, buckle up." Tim Morgan provides a crash course in flying a 737. You may want to print this out and take it with you on your next air journey, just in case...

    • From Rainbow Parties to Butt-Chugging: A Timeline of Moral Panics in the Last Decade - "It's hard to keep track of all of the many moral panics we've encountered over the last ten years or so. Which is why we've collected all of them into a handy, convenient timeline that will help you determine which violent, drug-fueled sex act is currently sweeping through your teenager's school."

    • Why The Joker and Not Batman is the Savior of Us All - "What if I told you that Batman is not the true hero in the Dark Knight saga? What if I told you instead that if The Joker did not exist, Gotham would be overrun by organized crime families and the corrupt politicians that live in their pockets? And what if I told you that there is mathematical proof of this argument's validity? Curious? Read on." Benjamin Chabot-Hanowell applies game theory to Gotham City.

    • The Man Who Broke Atlantic City - "Don Johnson won nearly $6 million playing blackjack in one night, single-handedly decimating the monthly revenue of Atlantic City’s Tropicana casino. Not long before that, he’d taken the Borgata for $5 million and Caesars for $4 million. Here’s how he did it." And no, it wasn't by card counting.

    • Internet Vices - Patrick Moberg sums up various ways of wasting one's time online: "Twitter is cocaine. ******* ANYONE is your friend. Yuppies do it on their iPhone. Cheap. Short. Fruitless."

    Happy invoicing!

Why The Joker and Not Batman is the Savior of Us All
So true, most of the world's problems come from idealism and well meaning interference. The Chinese, largely out of self interest, are moving into Africa in a big way. They provide roads and other practical infrastructure, largely built by Chinese companies, strictly in return for contracts to supply raw materials. They are not particularly fussy about who they deal with and who they need to bribe.

The result? Africa is beginning to move forward economically in a way it never did due to Western aid and our obsession with ethical trade, human rights and saving lives.
