Limited company director - Letter from HMRC needed?

Is the letter from HMRC regarding the self employment thing needed?

I see a lot of application packs from directors posted here not even mentioning that bit even though the guidance says it is required.

Being a director of a limited company and being self-employed are not connected.
Down with racism. Long live miscegenation!

You'll need to file a tax return if you're a director, and to that you just register with HMRC via a form called an SA1. You don't get a letter as such, just a Unique Tax Reference, and then a reminder each year that they are expecting a return.

As NaT says, there's no connection between being self employed and being a director - they are two very different things.
