    Learning a musical instrument.

    ALLERGY WARNING: This post may contain traces of Wilmslow.

    As I build up towards my midlife crisis which I had originally planned to coincide with the olympics (bit behind schedule) I've decided to learn to play a musical instrument.

    But since this is a Pondy Project, unless I see progress quickly I will get bored and dump it for something else.

    So, which is the simplest to get the basics of, Guitar/Banjo/Stringy thing, Piano/Keyboards/Pressy thing, Drum/Bongos/Hitty thing or Trumpet/Flute/Blowy thing?

    This will only be for my own amusement and I have no intention of inflicting this on anyone other than Mrs Pondy.

    Given you're only likely to play with your instrument for more than a couple minutes in front of Mrs Pondy, does it really matter

    Not being a muso myself, so FWIW, I'd suggest the piano with a view to possibly some keyboard work later.

                I taught myself to play guitar with this book;

                Solo Guitar Playing

                That's classical guitar oriented but there are tons of tutor books and online courses available.

                If you decide to learn to play guitar;

                Buy a decent qaulity instrument, a cheap instrument will be harder to keep in tune, harder on the fingers to play and sound like crap.

                Practice every day without exception, you only need 20 mins a day to get results and it'll take a while to build up calluses on your fingers so they don't get sore.

                Quickest way to learn is to find a good teacher.

                  Something it's possible to play quietly would be my recommendation! So not brass, since you can get electric drum kits. However if it's just you, an instrument that can make a tune on its own is probably best - guitar/keyboard being the most obvious.

                  But for slightly more fun options, what about an Irish whistle (can't remember the proper term) or a mouth organ?

                  You could also muck about making music on the PC as a more leftfield answer to a question you didn't ask.

                    Burt Weedon - Play (with yourself) in a day!

                    Get yourself a copy of the book, "Borrow" a guitar, see if it suits. All it will cost you is the book - initially.
