    Magnetic water softeners

Anyone tried one? Science looks a bit flakey - do they make a noticeable difference? And what's the difference between a £10 and £40 one?

Looking at the ones you just put over the pipes - no plumbing etc.

Sadly k2p2, like the magnetics around a fuel line to improve mpg, about as reliable a truth as when an MP opens their mouth.

The very mention of the madeupword "Magnetohydrodynamics" is a big clue.
If you think my attitude stinks, you should smell my fingers.

Interesting independent advice from Southern Water.

No one can authoritatively provide advice on the efficacy of
physical conditioning devices. However, physical conditioning
is a real effect that has been extensively demonstrated in
laboratory situations and published by various researchers.

However, the extent to which a device might control the
manifestation of hardness in a given situation can not
be guaranteed or predicted with confidence. At least one
purveyor accepts physical conditioning does not work
          in a few situations.

Not as good as the German word "Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenüber tragungsgesetz" which means

"beef labeling regulation & delegation of supervision law"

I'd query the use of "independent" in this context of a Water Supply company, however, your best bang for bucks and observable softening is still in the conventional use of an ion-exchange resin.

Vinegar is great for descaling such stuff such as taps, kettle, and, I hear, the dish washer.
