Senior Labour MPs believe the party leader appears too “cerebral” on television and are worried that he has not yet mastered speaking in “soundbites” that can be edited easily for news bulletins.
The Labour leader did not feature at all in the party’s official TV broadcast for next month's local elections, aired on Wednesday.
Instead the campaign film was presented by the fertility expert and Labour supporter Lord Winston.
Senior figures in Mr Miliband’s team fear that the party is missing important opportunities to reach voters because he looks too “intellectual” and often quotes economic history rather than arguments that chime more easily with the public.
