"Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's...

...and unto God the things that are God's"

    So what is the beef?

For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think

The point of the gospel there was to say that money is not owned by the people and therefore who controls the money should just have it back.

That quote in the thread title is referring to how people should follow earthly laws except where they conflict with godly laws (a bit like the 1st and 1nd laws of Robotics), so that people can't claim to be exempt due to 'following a higher law'. As long as the Cardinal doesn't say people shouldn't pay the taxes, he's as much right as anyone to criticise Cameron's policies.

            Does the Church pay tax?

Well, obviously it's not meant to be taken literally; it refers to any manufacturers of dairy products.

                Blessed are the yogurt makers.

But what did the Romans ever do for us?

If you are employed by a church you pay tax. The bible defines "the church" as the collective body of people who are Christians. So which "the Church" were you referring to?
