Stop blaming the eurozone crisis, Tories tell George Osborne

"The Chancellor is facing criticism from within his own party after claiming Europe’s debt problems have “killed off” growth in the UK.

Mr Osborne delivered a stark message that the Government is powerless in the face of “headwinds” from Europe, as Spain became the fourth country to require a multi-billion pound bail-out.

But he was accused of making excuses for Britain’s “awful economic performance”.

David Ruffley, an MP and member of the Treasury Select Committee, urged the Chancellor “radical action” to get the economy growing.

“Of course eurozone meltdown is damaging business confidence but this must not be used as an alibi for no growth in the UK,” he said.

Mr Ruffley said the Chancellor must attract money from rich foreign countries and scrap more regulation for small businesses.

“We can’t just say the eurozone is destroying confidence in the UK and nothing can be done,” he said.

Lord Forsyth of Drumlean, a former adviser on tax to Mr Osborne and minister under Sir John Major, also called for more measures to boost growth, such as scrapping the planned 3p increase on petrol this autumn.

“Of course market conditions are difficult but I think George really needs to address urgently are the tax burden,” he told The Daily Telegraph. “One of the reasons we are not getting growth is the level of the tax burden and degree of cost imposed on competitiveness by excessive regulation.”

His comments came as Douglas Carswell, MP for Clacton and a prominent eurosceptic, launched a coruscating attack on the Chancellor on his website.

He pointed out that Switzerland does a larger proportion of its trade with Europe but is currently growing at two per cent, in comparison with Britain’s shrinking economy. "

At least this time there is a chance to get stable Govt because not many people will keep voting LibDems
