Russia even in the time of the USSR was doing a lot of trade with Cyprus much to the annoyance of the US. It is one of the reasons why the US backed Turkey in the invasion of Cyprus. The UK lost its credibility because it did not keep to the agreement to defend the island that was the agreement to have British bases there. BTW, the RAF flew its fighter out two day prior to the invasion. Cyprus now has more Russians than Brits living there.
