Finally good news from tax cutting Tories!

Pay up, motorists: Transport Secretary Justine Greening says she will not stop rise in fuel tax

The imminent rise in fuel duty seems certain to go ahead as motorists must pay higher taxes to help clear Britain’s debts, the Transport Secretary Justine Greening has warned.

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Miss Greening indicated that she was not prepared to lobby the Treasury to delay or abandon the 3p increase in fuel duty this August.

She disclosed that her focus was instead on “challenging” petrol firms to cut the cost of fuel at the pumps to reflect the falling cost of oil globally.

Miss Greening is a former Treasury minister and her backing for higher taxes for motorists is likely to come as a blow to families facing petrol prices of more than £1.40 a litre. Most of the cost is tax.

There is growing pressure on David Cameron and George Osborne to delay the planned fuel duty increase amid fears that the issue is becoming toxic among voters.

However, asked if she believes the rise should go ahead, Miss Greening said: “The taxes that we get in fund the public services that we all rely on. Surely it’s better to challenge the petrol retailers to pass on reductions to motorists and actually I think that’s probably the most important thing to do.”

She added: “I absolutely think that the Treasury need to deliver on their deficit reduction plan. You see what’s happening in countries across Europe [and] I think you realise why having a credible deficit reduction plan has been so important for this country and we’re certainly not going to move away from that.”

However, despite stressing the importance of motoring taxes in cutting the deficit, Miss Greening also warns that the Conservatives must do more to offer an optimistic vision of Britain’s future instead of focusing on spending cuts.

She said that ministers should do more to appeal to younger voters by offering them “a Britain that they can be proud of.”

“We need to not just talk about what we are having to do today and getting our public finances back in order and making sure we cut our cloth to have public services that the public can afford,” Miss Greening said. “We need to talk about all the stuff that we are doing to look ahead for what Britain needs not just today but tomorrow. Particularly for young people, it massively matters.”

To appeal to young voters, Conservatives should also back long-term infrastructure projects such as the £32 billion HS2 high-speed rail scheme. “It’s always easy to focus on the now and the next 10 years,” she said. “What we have to do is now to look further ahead. We can’t just hope that Britain is going to be successful for young people who are growing up in it today. We’ve got to build a country that they can be successful in.”

The scheme will ultimately help alleviate pressure on the rail network in the South East, she said.

Referring to her daily journey to Westminster from her Putney constituency, Miss Greening added: “Anyone who does as I do, I got on the train at Clapham Junction absolutely crammed, will know that crowding and capacity matters massively in the South East.”

The Transport Secretary, who recently outlined plans to increase some *motoring fines by up to 50 per cent, also said that “like many people who live in London”, she is an occasional driver – usually using her VW Golf only at weekends. "

If there was a wart duty, she'd pay enough to bail out the whole country

There are still too many people on the road, therefore petrol must still be too cheap.

If we close the M1 and quadruple train ticket prices, petrol will be even more too cheap.
