and the eu is paying for this

    in spain

Jobless benefits will be cut to 50pc of a person's salary after six months. Currently, jobseekers are paid 70pc of the wages they earned in the last six months of employment, and 60pc after six months.

its sounds as though the benefit is only being cut by 10 % after 6 months oh the hardship

Feck me, that can't be right.

Benefits of 50%+ of your last six months wages?

This must be that austerity I keep hearing about.

Is it any wonder they need bailing out? that is absurd is it any wonder that people don't want to fully intergrate into the EU

What do you expect? Do you want the EU and the Spanish government to just let Spanish society fall into anarchy?

I think I'd rather Europe pays this way than face the consequences of mass civil rebellion in Spain.

In Germany you get 90% of your last salary in Unemployment Benefits. Not too sure how long it goes on for, but I know it's over 12 months.

Here's a scenario for you that could quite easily happen in Spain. Unemployment keeps rising, benefits are slashed; people get hungry and start fighting for food (which gets more expensive due to a poor veg and fruit harvest). A leader emerges, probably with that wonderful combination of 'national pride' and socialism. Leader gets power in an emergency election (or worse, the army take over). Leader then picks the old fights with other countries to restore 'national pride'. Invades Gib. Takes side of Argentina over Falklands issue. Europe and NATO are split down the middle, Britain has to fight two wars it can't afford, Europe's economy is dealt the final blow.

The scenario if Greece falls further into the abyss is even worse and simpy doesn't bear thinking about. Neither Greece nor Spain have been stable democracies for very long and both have long standing territorial disputes with other big regional powers.

Face it, anyone with some knowledge of recent European history should understand that we will have to subsidize some southern European countries to at least maintain stable democratic states, otherwise the consequences will be a lot worse than they are now.

Not quite, I wouldn't get anything as I don't pay for unemployment benefits and it varies as well, try here: Selbstberechnung

Mich I see what you're saying but I do believe the Argies stuck it to Spain with the takeover over Repsol which cost Spain millions if not Billions of dollars. Not to diminish the point you made, as I think it was rather well thought out thing is Spain allowed the property bubble to take hold and proces to rise so it was only a matter of time before they found themselves in trouble.

You're right, but ruling parties change, and rulers will do what they find convenient. Have you ever heard of an extremist valuing the truth?

In other words, this Spanish government might be angry at the Argentinians, the next one might not, and they'll decide whether to be angry on matters of convenience.
