University, huh, yeah What is it good for Absolutely nothing

Graduate jobs: Fifth of graduates work part-time as full-time jobs decline - Telegraph

I wonder how many science graduates have McJobs? And how many who took media studies?

Those with rigorous degrees from good unis probably have no problem. Those with crap degrees from ex-polys probably do. Which is as it should be, TBH. It's only Labour's silly conceit that everyone is equal that led to high expectations.

Generally true - though I read an article a while ago (dentist waiting room) about graduates with rubbish jobs. There was a maths grad from Oxford at pizza express! He only got a Desmond - alot of employers look for a Geoff or an Atilla.

I would have thought a Desmond in Maths from oxford was at least as good as a Geoff or Atilla somewhere else. Probably down to the quirks of the individual.

It was actually John Major who started the mess by changing Polys to Unis.

One of the problems of having someone in power without a degree is that don't understand the merits of each type of institution.

Polys weren't meant to churn out people with Meeja Studies degrees, they were aimed at churning out people with useful skills and qualifications for industry.

The traditional unis were there to churn out people with qualifications that may not be useful to industry.

Yeah but it was Labour who said 50% of young uns should go to "uni". And Labour who threw money at the ex-polys so they could offer Meeja studies type degrees.
The change of name from poly to uni was neither here nor there since most employers know the top unis anyway.

I dream of a setup where access to higher education was free for 'useful' courses provided the applicant was clever enough - although that would mean making A levels difficult again, which might require making GCSEs hard too.

If you want to do a degree in something for your own interest like Klingon or something that the country did not need, like Media Studies then you can pay yourself. If you want to a do a good degree but did not get the grades then you can pay yourself, or maybe have means tested support towards it or something.

I hope that by the time my children are old enough to look into this the system has righted itself.

The idea that everyone should go to university and everyone is capable of achieving the same is absurd.
