Beggar can keep collecting bowl diamond ring

Beggar can keep collecting bowl diamond ring
    (Filed: 09/06/2006)

A homeless man who found a diamond solitaire ring in his collection bowl has been told he can keep it after the owner failed to come forward.

The 28-day window for the owner of the suspected engagement ring to claim it has elapsed, which means it can now be returned to the finder.

A West Mercia police spokesman said that no one had attempted to contact police about the diamond, which was thrown into the beggar's collection pot last month.

The homeless man had taken up his usual spot outside a Marks and Spencer store in Shrewsbury and was using a pot to collect coins from passers-by when he received the unusually large donation.

He did not see the person who gave him the ring, but when he discovered the treasure in his pot he contacted the police and handed it in.

Shrewsbury Police then appealed for the owner to contact them to make sure they did want to throw the diamond away.

They believe the previous owner had been trying to sell it in a jewellery shop moments beforehand but changed his mind and threw it into the pot instead.

"The time is now up for the original owner of the ring to come forward," Chief Insp Paul Moxley, of Shrewsbury Police, said.

"He has not done so and therefore the homeless man who handed it in can now collect it."

Ok, lets be honest - how many of you would have talked to the police about it in place of that beggar? Be honest - its not like anyone has got reputation to treasure!

There was a similar case around here about 10 years ago...

One of the homeless, a chap with proper dreadlocks who you can smell from about 25 yards away, found a Brown Envelope.

Said Brown Envelope contained no less than £2k (if I remember correctly).

So he took it to the plod.

    And someone claimed it.

Think he was offered a reward but declined it.

Just coz they are homeless doesn't automatically make them tealeaves...

    Teacosy Pete, RIP.
