    BT or plus.net fibre/FTTC

    Can anyone recommend either of the above? I know plus.net were acquired by BT a while ago.

    Looking at taking out an 80mbps download/20mbps upload package. There's only a few quid difference between the two - i'm not bothered by that.

    BT says it has "unlimited" downloads, whereas PN is limited to 250GB (with downloads between 0000h til 0800h not counted)

    What are they like for online gaming? Low pings are very important.

    Is the PN Pro add-on (£5/mth) worth paying for?

    Can't speak for the online gaming, but am happy with BT, they also give you unlimited access to the BT Openzone hotspots, which is very usefull.

    Have gone with BT vision too, v-happy with that, thought we would miss Sky but we don't. Kids and Mrs love the on-demand boxed sets of stuff. Plus any traffic to BBC iPlayer and other TV catchup stuff doesn't count to your monthly cap.

      Not used Plusnet Fibre, but had a broadband account with them for a while.

      It was cheaper than BT but when my son was using it for gaming he was finding times where it was just basically crap and times when it was OK. They constantly asked for diagnostic info from the router, failed to do anything, then asked for the same diagnostic info from the router as they had 'lost' it or never received it. They then usually claimed that they'd 'tasked it to BT' and nothing ever got done.

      In the end, the performance was so sketchy, they got binned after a year and whent back to BT.
      When freedom comes along, don't PISH in the water supply.....

        I dumped PN because their traffic shaping, throttling, and poor bandwidth made it almost impossible to achieve whatever quota they promised.
        PN likes to sell the Hovis image and OK for the elderly doing the odd email and family farcebook but for gaming? I don't do BT no matter what, I dumped them and switched to LLU and never looked back.

        I think you should post this query in the specialist ThinkBroadband forums to get better informed feedback.

          Gaming is fine. We prioritise it across our network. I'm provisioned on our FTTC product and am lucky to get the full ~78Mbps down. Pings are exceptional:

          Sounds like there was something else amiss there as it's certainly not typical of the service we provide. Sorry we never got to the bottom of it for you.

          Our Extra Fibre product (the one the OP is talking about) has 2Mbps rate limits on Peer-to-Peer and binary Usenet traffic for ~3 hours during the evening. Aside from that, you should find everything pretty much comes down at line speed (If the rate limiting bothers you, the Pro add-on will remove it).

              They are all ******* tulip, just some are a little less tulip than others.

              They always make you, the consumer, jump through hoops, change your router, change your filters, etc, etc when you've done this all before to show its their fecking system that's at fault. And then they charge you 200 quid to tell you its not their fault! Grrrrrrrrr!

                For an alternative view, have a look at the Plusnet forums and have a look at the number of people who have had/do have the same problems I had.

                I'm sorry you never got to the bottom of it either, because I paid you with my actual money and never saw the service I should have seen, but thanks for the apology. Does it come in token form that I can use to offset the time and money I wasted ?

                    2Mb meaning: megabyte or megabit? (per second?)

                    2MB/s is roughly 20mbps
