Should three parent babies be allowed?

'Three-parent baby' fertility technique could be made legal - Telegraph

On one hand I don't like "Frankenstein science".

On the other, imagine if scientists could identify the sasguru gene and eliminate that from society - how wonderful would that be?

4 parents is clearly where it becomes wrong.

How true! And right on cue is a wail article to prove the point. Lesbian couple, surrogate mother and sperm donor in three-year legal battle over right to be child's parents | Mail Online

Depends if they are all gay or not, surely?
While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'

          sasguru is an early prototype.

Only if the DNA donor re going to be the ones bringing the kid up. A 3-bio-parent baby brought up by an interracial gay couple, that's a good one.

The three parent babies will have a proper mum and dad. The third parent is being used to ensure invalid DNA is removed to ensure genetic defects aren't inherited.

Hence there are ethical issues but they have nothing to do with same sex couples, surrogacy or sperm donors. Although we really have to congratulate the Mail journalist for getting virtually every Daily Mail pet subject in a single story. They do however seem to miss the house prices of the participants so its not perfect.

In the scenario described the third party would just be supplying a couple of DNA patches, which hardly seems to warrant being called a parent (and no doubt in due course these will be capable of being generated artificially).

Where it would get iffy is if two parents contribute the nucleus DNA and a third parent provides a complete set of mitochondrial DNA, which does contribute substantially to someone's unique identity.

And an early indication that we should steer well clear of the whole notion.
