I find it quite remarkable how conservatives can criticise free movement of labour while claiming that a free market in everything else will be of greatest benefit to most. Why not let the market decide, in line with conservative economic thinking?

It is not the free movement in labour that worries them, it is the free movement of criminals and welfare dependents.

Wouldn't it be easier to reform the welfare system to say that you have to have been here for 'x' number of years and contributed in that time before you're entitled to it, similar to what they do in Denmark?

Yep, fair enough, but is a visa system with all the inevitable bureaucracy and cost to the taxpayer that goes with it really the way to deal with that?

because the market is skewed by other governments taking less tax or subsidising specific industries to build them. If it were truly a free market then a head to head would be fine.

As our government enforces things like labour rights, Health & Safety and a universal benefit system we will always be more expensive than countries using underage labour, burning toxic cables or letting their old starve in the street.
