Back in 2003 I had to accept a 3-month contract in Rome for a PLC company. I had to cut my pay from a 50 quid an hour London contract to 20 euros an hour. What I was surprised of is the quality of people. Most of them they were experts in several technologies, they knew Unix,Windows, Application Servers, programming in several languages, and so on... and most of them had 5 years degrees. Most projects failed because of the extremely poor organisational skills of the italian managers but the quality of the lower end workers was very high. They could happily go for a 500-600quid a day contract in the city (ok for some of them language is an issue). All of them working for a little more than a 1000 euros a month and not even complaining about that. Of course, they couldn't survive on this salary but they could count of their parents/grandparents wealth who in the majority of the cases paid them a full house to live on. Fear that you have plenty of competition within the EU should the economy get worse in Italy.
