    What's iTunes?

Is it one of those Apple products that locks you in and screws you over?

No. Apple sell songs as MP3 like everyone else these days.

I wouldn't know, I have never bought an mp3 from iTunes

          just use Spotify
You can import your old MP3's into it and the subscription works out a lot cheaper than buying albums

Not a fan of an always-on internet service for music. Which is odd since Netflix is wonderful, but it's probably because we'd have to get WiFi speakers set up and I want to be able to listen to music while walking about outside.

Although some of these services let you download locally, IIRC?

No, they've always delivered songs as AAC, which offers better quality than MP3: Advanced Audio Coding - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Of course iTunes can play MP3, as well as loads of other formats, and also import CDs as MP3 if you prefer, convert stuff to MP3, etc. But you'd be hard pressed to find anything that couldn't play AAC anyway, so there's not much point downgrading to MP3.
