    is it "cannot" or is it "can not" or are both valid?

    both are valid, but u'd use can not when the not connects with something like not only

          Both are acceptable, as, of, course, is " can't' ", which used to be spelt "ca'n't", the apostrophe being used to replace each missing letter.
