It probably already has and will continue to do so.

Surely increased efficiency through rationalisation of headcount is a good thing? That's what we're told when it happens in any other industry

Indeed it is, but then the average banker contributes a lot more in taxes than most ordinary workers

So the government pays billions to keep the banks afloat and they provide some of it back in bonuses.

What are great business idea! Lets pay billions to other industries to keep them going, providing they pay huge bonuses and the government will be boomed! National debt paid off in no time.

Why did no-one think of this before?

Oh come on BP you know what I'm saying and that's not that we should keep them afloat, incidentally if the banks had been allowed to fail as it were wouldn't the government have to had paid out to savers as they provide a guarantee up to a certain amount isn't it now 80k? I wonder how much this would have amounted to?

Casino banking. Privatise profits and nationalise losses and then expect the public to think it's great that bailout money is used for massive bonuses and some comes back in taxes.

You couldn't make this crap up.

Let's pay asylum seekers a million each per month, after all think of the tax receipts.

I think the point to be made here was that redundancies of thousands of highly paid workers (and contractors being terminated too) will lead to a noticeable fall in tax take. Nothing else.

We can print the missing money. Simples.
