What do you call the female side of your relationship when you are not married?

Inspired by NLUK in the professional forums...

How do you refer to your partner?

Always a conundrum for me, this one.

I like SO = Significant Other, but my SO hates it, thinks it's impersonal

"girlfriend" at my age can sound somehow not quite right, like I'm some pervy lothario

SWMBO or 'er indoors' doesn't fit my situation since we don't co-habit

So I usually say "partner" which I don't really like as it sounds a bit 'New Man Right On PC' to me. But my partner likes it

I didn't know you were from the West Country.

He refers to me as girlfriend (although we're engaged - the word fiancée just sounds stupid). I refer to him as partner or other half. But only where necessary (like online and/or to complete strangers). Mostly we both use each others' names.
