I thought they got computers to generate all possible phone numbers and call them? That being why giving nobody your number doesn't avoid the nuisance calls.

data protection act is routinely broken every day (passing personal info outside of EC for example) by the big multi nationals and the information commissioner never does anything about it, so the chances of him actually enforcing some laws on real hard core criminals is non existant. many of these calls are coming in from india and elsewhere outside the EC and there is little chance of enforcing laws. its all a bit of a shambles.

+1. the only way to actually solve the issue is to proceed down the line until you find the name of the law firm who is paying for the leads and then shop them to the commissioner.

The trouble is that it doesn't make them run up huge phone bills nowadays.

VOIP and cut rate blocks of call time make the telco costs of these campaigns relatively cheap.
