    English lions

Millionaire property developer told to pull down 12ft pillars topped with lions at his £1.7million 'castle' after he built them without permission

The builder, who moved into his 1840s property around 15 years ago, has been handed an enforcement notice and told to remove them.

But Mr Packer says the posts have been well-received by local residents and has vowed to fight the 'unelected officials' who are demanding their removal.

The property magnate, who lives in the exclusive Sneyd Park area of Bristol, said: 'An Englishman's home is supposed to be his castle.

'Well, I live in a castle but it doesn't feel that way after seeing these officials come up here and tell me to take my pillars down.' "

My comment? Every castle-like looking structure should be entitled to put lions on the gates. And have a moat. Archers are optional.

And the lions aren't proportional to the pillars.

They should be torn down on the grounds of good taste.

Surely the same could be said of every mock Tudor house in England. Tacky displays of wealth by people who couldn't afford a real castle.

They would look out of place outside a victorian terrace but in context I think they look fine TBH.
