Night away within 3 hours of london

This weekend i am looking at taking a ladyfriend away for sunday night. Leaving early Sunday morning and returning late Monday evening. Ideally within 3 hours of London (train, plan or automobile) door to door. Looking for somewhere we can enjoy the countryside and go for a walk, stay in a decent hotel and get some decent food.

    Ideas so far have been

    1) Stay at Rick Steins place in Cornwall (too far, about a 5 hour drive)
    2) Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons - fully booked
    3) Bristol - visit Cheddar gorge one day and go out sunday night in Bristol

Bristol is currently top of my list, but not really convinced. I would love to go to the lake district but not really viable option for 1 night.

Can anyone recommend a spot of natural beauty we can stay within 2-3 hours of London with decent restaurants nearby

Try getting somewhere in Bourton-on-the-Water in Gloucestershire. We have stayed at The Old Manse a couple of times. Lovely little village with plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from, and some walks nearby in the Cotswolds too.

I've always liked the Chilterns myself. (have friends who live there, though, never stayed in a hotel).

Did think about Le Touquet actually, but to drive in france now you need a fire extinguisher, a breathaliser and numerous other things that i probably wont be able to get in time for then.

You don't need a breathalyser anymore and I don't think you need a fire extinguisher. I think you might need a warning triangle and a hi-viz jacket though.
