    Joined-up Government

So Mrs Swamp has a Biometric Resident Permit issued by the UK Border Agency. It is an expensive but fool-proof proof of her identity. She even has to produce a thumb print at Heathrow to get through the gate.

Now she has received her British Citizenship, she was required to attend an interview with the Identity and Passport Service to get her first passport (despite being officially now a Brit...)

They seem oblivious to the fact she has a cast-iron proof of her identity, in her Biometric ID Card. So they question her for 1/2 hour in an office in central London, asking such mundane questions as "what floor of the building did you have your citizenship ceremony?" and "what route do you walk your child to nursery?".

They obviously want to know that Mrs Swamp is indeed Mrs Swamp. She has a government identity card that proves she is she, but because it was issued by one department (UKBA) and she was questioned by another (IPS), she has to waste 30 minutes telling them what breakfast cereal she eats.

I suggest this Government needs more IT Contractors.

It's normal for good security to act like this.

Civvies don't get it, but then again their job is to answer questions.
