That's pretty much how it seems to work, yes. I think they're going over the top on this. I find the EDL pretty nauseating, but I think a lot of the people who've joined it are probably just rather dimwitted people who are scared of the world around them; Anonymous's actions can only make them even more scared and radical, so it's counterproductive. It's also everyone's right to keep his opinions to himself. I prefer the approach of the members of York mosque, who invited EDL protesters in for tea, biscuits and to watch a football match on the big screen and ask any questions they might have about Islam.
And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014

            You're sharp this morning.

I would have thought that an enterprising gent like you could commission them to acquire my references.

Or they could ask their god to provide proof to everyone that it is real and end that argument once and for all?

Yes that is basically what they do, they're a good old fashioned vigilante group.

The trouble is, half the time they end up with popular support - ousting pedophiles or attacking Scientology, Westboro Baptsist Church - and the rest of the time they look worse than the people they are trying to take on.

Bunch of nerds using power with absolutely no sense of responsibility or consequences.
