You could try running with scissors.
While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'

I don't need to carry extra weights when I run.

I was just looking at calorie burning for cycling. I've been making sure I do a quick 6 mile circuit each evening when I finish work on my knackered old mountain bike with offroad tyres. It's got a nice long two mile hill on it which gets nice and steep at the end and I'm averaging 10mph at the moment. I'd like to get that up to 12 mph and I was wondering if there is a difference in how many calories you burn depending on how fast you ride?

Modern cycle computers have sensors for the pedals to measure cadence, and some even monitor heart rate.

Certainly the higher the heart rate, and the longer you keep it there, the more calories you burn. But this is not the whole story. You also need to know your weight, and this combined with the rate of elevation will give a more accurate measure of Watts/hr which can readily be translated into calories.

Long story short, get MapMyRide on iPhone, configure it correctly (and honestly) and you'll be more accurate than a cycle computer.

In other words, man up and ride faster.

There seems to be an optimum.

If you're running 5K for example - if it takes you 32 minutes it burns fewer calories than if it takes you 34 minutes. But I presume that if you slow enough that you're not exerting yourself then the calories drop off.

I use Endomondo - it's great, I've got quite addicted to logging my workouts.
