    Safety or stupidity?

London could see 20mph speed limit on nearly all residential streets by 2020 - Transport - News - London Evening Standard

A 20mph speed limit could be introduced on almost all residential roads and high streets in London by the end of the decade, according to the mayor’s transport advisor.

Motorists could be restricted to that limit within the M25 on all but a major arteries into the capital, according to Isabel Dedring, deputy mayor for transport.

Supporters of the 20mph limits - in place on 19 per cent on the capital’s roads - say it has benefits for road safety and improves quality of life for residents and encourages cycling and walking.

    Fine with me.
While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'

We've got that here in NL. I don't mind, it's just a shame there are bloody speed bumps every few metres.

The average speed in London is effectively 10 mph anyway i.e. If you're driving within the M25 you can expect to do 10 miles every hour.
          Hard Brexit now!

Oxford has 20 limits, and as far as I can tell the only effect is to make things much more dangerous for cyclists. Because it's much more difficult to overtake them quickly, you end up having to cut back in on them too soon and not giving them as much room as you could if you were allowed to do 30.

Though this being Oxford it's perhaps not such a bad thing. It's amazing how many of the "brightest and best" haven't yet grasped the concept of looking before walking out into the road.

and everyone in London complies with traffic laws of course

Would be more interesting to know how many different languages the signs will be in by 2020.

Why would there be different languages if the symbols are pretty much universal?

The issue is that at the transition points between 30 > 20 mph signs are easily missed - there is an inordinate amount of street sign cluttering urban roads these days - it would be better to either replace 30 with 20 mph for all built up areas or perhaps use a painted line coloured differently to parking restrictions to signify a 20 zone

20 mph. FFS we might as well go back to the horse and cart.
