Papiss Cissé refuses to wear Newcastle's Wonga-branded shirt | Football | guardian.co.uk (http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2013/jul/17/papiss-cisse-newcastle-wonga-shirt)

Papiss Cissé has pulled out of Newcastle United's pre-season training camp in Portugal following a row over wearing the club sponsor Wonga's logo.

The striker, who is a devote Muslim, is refusing to promote the money-lending company on religious grounds and has offered to wear an unbranded shirt or one bearing the name of a charity.

ignoring the appalling grammar / spelling from the qaulewty Nhewspaper quite interesting stand.

or take exception to wearing a shirt with a sponsor in a particular industry. In that case I actually agree with the player but I'm just saving £45 by not getting this years shirt.

I think its a continuation from January when he wanted to leave. However he does have a point and I'm not buying a shirt with wonga on it.

If you can't afford the shirt, have you considered a pay day loan?

They seem to have loads of different completely unrelated marketing schemes, seems quite disorganised really. There is a brutal one that runs on local radio to the tune of lovely day by bill withers...

I'm quite surprised that other players from 'oop North' have not refused seeing as Wonga are a major financial contributor to the Conservatives :-)

Initial fine of £5,000, rising to £47,987,654,334 if he hasn't paid by Friday.

I wonder how much extra publicity wonga has got from this and if they are pleased?

I don't blame him. Apparently now when you pull on a Newcastle shirt you have to give 1600% :eyes

Are Wonga any worse than previous shirt sponsor Northern Rock?

Yes. At least you could argue that Northern Rock was a savings establishment and provided carefully checked loans.

one was incompetent the other is immoral.

if you have seen the fear in people's eyes when they really don't have enough cash to make it to the end of the month you would see the difference. And don't be silly most of us are well off and have no problem with not having enough money.

But assuming Northern Rock paid interest, that's not allowed under Islam either. That's why you get Sharia-compliant accounts which pull some fancy trickery and call the interest something else.

I'm not convinced that 100% self-certified mortgages counts as carefully checked.

I reckon one is about 3286% better...
