    Coarse fishing

Taking Cretin01 and Cretin02 camping on the weekend. They're really excited. (So am I, shhhh )

I have coarse fished once (with an old hand) and am a competent sea fisher. So I bought a couple of basic carp rods (great ebay bundle that comes with rod alarms, couple of reels, double rod stand etc etc).

I also bought some basic tackle on ebay.

Is there any good instructions on setting up a basic rig. I am fishing a lake in Henlow, so am I setting up for carp, or what am I setting up for?

Any other tips? Do I need ground bait? Spam and marmite? I once used Mr Kipling cherry bakewells (crumbled) as ground bait and caught a truckload - fickle fickle fish eh?

    Any advice gratefully received.

    Ta

    What would EO do ?
I would do exactly what you are doing so far. Use my experience, get the gear, get them excited, ask others for their experience.

In addition, I would go to the fishmongers the day before and buy a couple of big fishes. Keep them in a cool bag.
If the day goes tits up, send the kids for an ice cream and stick one of the tescos fish on yer hook.
Then fight with it like its a tiger shark.

the important thing = give the little buggers something to remember
make sure you get photies. these days will never come again

      Two questions;

      1. Why are you taking Sasguru's children away for the weekend?
      2. Does coarse fishing involve a lot of swearing?
And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014

It does if you accidentally cast your tackle into overhead power lines.

Look out behind you, that is my first tip.

Second, have a bit of a google and learn the difference between float fishing, where you have a float, and your baited hook dangles beneath it, and legering, where you use a big weight to put your line & bait on the bottom. If you are going for carp, some sort of legering is probably the way to go (that's what the alarms are for, as you don't have a float to watch) but it's quite dull compared with float fishing as there isn't actually anything to do.

If it is their first time then teaching them the knots, how to cast, pulling hooks out of their ears etc will be an event in itself. You don''t really need to catch anything.

When I was a kid my dad gave me his copy of Mr Crabtree goes Fishing. I learnt a lot from that.

While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'

EO's approach doesn't involve getting electrocuted or pulling hooks out of ears. Who should I believe?

What are you fishing for ?

If you're taking kids, best go for roach/perch.

Light float with small (size 18 or 20) hooks, fishing at depth with single or double maggot. Adjust depth slightly upwards if the bites don't come. Loose feed some maggots.

if you're fishing carp, you'll need to learn a bit first. Slightly more specialised. Floating boillies on a hair rig, etc etc.

TBH Suity, your requirements gathering was ******** crap !!

sorry, didn't mean to bring a downer to Suity's worm-drowning thread.

Go Suity, take your children and see if, amongst you, you can outwit a fish
