    Smart Watches - Tax Deductable?

Anyone considering buying a wristwatch device that can make phone calls, surf the Web and take photos when they hit the market? Samsung Galaxy Gear will shortly be released in the US.

Put through as a company asset and claim Capital Allowances?

Hell no IMO. iphones and smartphone had to get reclassified to get in awhile ago. This will have to be the same I reckon.. and seriously.. it's a gadget not a business tool.

Unless you are developing for it of course...

I find it hard to see how something like that would be tax deductible...as NLUK has said it is a gadget, not something that will be used primarily for business!

But then just about every manager has a company iPad, and they're really just expensive toys

No. My company considers it a frivolous waste of money.

The Director will permit a phone upgrade in 2015 however (plenty of life left in the iPhone 4 yet...).

Can't you class it off as a bluetooth headset type thing? What if your phone comes with a watch (surely this is going to happen with the Samsung one)?

Can't see this one being allowable, IMHO - as others have said, more a gadget than a business tool.

That said, being determinedly geeky, I have had a Sony Smartwatch for over a year and find it pretty handy in the workplace.....main functions are being able to see who is calling without needing the phone out of jacket (ClientCo has pretty strict 'no phones due to our super secret stuff' policy) and being able to read incoming text messages and GMails on it. Also, as an aside, there is an app that can cause the connected phone to ring (handy for getting out of that boring meeting...?) and another one that allows viewing of the phones camera as a feed to the watch......

Anyway, I digress - can't see such a product as 'wholly and exclusively' so, for that reason, I am out!

Then it would be a phone with a watch.. This is a watch with a phone... until they get round to reclassifying it as a wrist mounted smart phone.

To be fair, look at the number of people that kidded themselves thinking tablets were useful for note taking etc and not one of them use them any more. I am sure plenty of people will kid themselves this is acceptable and claim it for the same reasons. What is acceptable and what people think they can claim is black and white but people do it anyway. True HMRC might not spot it but when they do it is going to cost a hell of a lot more than the 20% saving putting through the business. All this for a questionable £100?
