    Another Boeing woopsie

BBC News - Jumbo jet 'stuck' after landing at wrong airport

The giant cargo jet was heading for McConnell air force base in Wichita but instead touched down at nearby Colonel James Jabara airport.

Local media report that the jet may be too large to take off from Jabara's 1,860m (6,100ft) runway.

Boeing is sending a tug to the airport to turn the plane around, reports say.

    ...

The cargo plane normally requires a runway of 2,780m (9,119ft) to take off at maximum weight, it says, and the tug dispatched to the airport to turn the jumbo around has broken down en route.
All going according to plan then....

I'm sure the collective expertise of CUK General can help here. Suggestions welcome.

Why not seal the doors and fill the plane with helium to make it a bit lighter for take off?

No, not American enough; why not cut down all of the trees in the area and drive it to the next airport?

How about building an enormous moving walkway on the runway? That would make it effectively as long as they want.

If they remove all the cargo - and drain out most of the fuel - leaving just enough to get to a bigger airport - and tow/push it to the very edge of the runway apron, they could probably do a take-off on a 1,860m runway.

No doubt that's what Boeing are number crunching right now. If not, they're f*****

But can they find a pilot mad enough to try it?

Not really. There's always rocket (jet) assisted take-off if all else fails.

Then hire an Airbus to go and pick the cargo up

I think by the time 'all else fails' it'll be a job for the garbage disposal companies.
