Do you have a student loan?

I'm at the younger end of the member base so many of you may have missed the student loans era entirely, or paid them off long ago, but this year's SATR calculations have me paying the final chunk off on mine, which would be rather nice (debt free other than a quarter-mil in mortgages!)

So, poll on it's way... I'll try to cover all the likely scenarios but there are quite a few.

My second year was the first year of loans (1990), and I got £420, then £400 for the last year.

I think I deferred payments for a year, and then it was something like £13 per month. But long since paid off.
Will work inside IR35. Or for food.

Paid mine off in full when I was permie.

My wife hasn't paid any of hers back yet, and she never will - one of the reasons why we don't share split.

Just got bitten on the bum by Student Loans Company - Not been paying for a few years and had to pay 7.5k in one chunk. Oh well was good while it lasted....

So how much are you youngsters having to pay back?

Has a student loan for the first few years after UNI (3 if I remember) and then went contracting. The first and I mean first thing I did was pay it off with my first dividend.

I went from a 28k job with a car as a consultant and earned £10k for six weeks worth back in 97. On that first invoice a contracting God was born.

Seems like your accountant might have dropped the ball there?

I think I was in the 2nd version of SL, by a year or two, because my wife's a couple of years older and she was on the tail end of the previous system where you could still get some grants as well as loans.

So I think my loans were ~£3k year as uni fees were ~£1k/year.

It changed at least once since my day (pay 9% of your income over £11k or something like that), these days many unis charge £9k in fees per year so students graduating this year or next will have £30k+ in debts, AND the interest rate is higher than the old ones.
