Most unsurprising statistic of the year

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4783721.stm

    Public sector tops illness league

Local government workers have the most days off sick annually, a report from Bupa healthcare has said.

They take an average of 11 days off sick a year - more than twice as many as hotel and leisure trade staff, who have the best UK illness record.

I don't think I've had eleven days sick in my whole life.

I work in a public sector department and out of a team of 12 at least 2 are off every day, the boss is the worst culprit and the rest follow his example, when i came in feeling a bit under the weather he was trying to make me go home... sod that!

I would say those figures are a little conservative.

Going back ten years or so, I worked for a local authority. If the staff did not use up all of their allocated sick days they could take them as extra holiday at the end of the year.

11 days is waste out of 250 days, that's 4.5%, hardly worth complaining about.

It's a big problem if it's an SME or a large company in a very competitive market.

Public sector workers tend to have more sock days, sorry sick days, as they work harder than the private sector and so are more prone to stress related illness.

I read this somewhere or other so it must be true.

Enormously more strikes too. If you still read my blog Dim you'd have had this news about 3 months ago.

PS Except the number of sick days has gone up 30% since I mentioned it. Sounds about right for the public sector. Soon the bastards will be retiring on full disability pensions before they have to attend an interview for the job.

I dont blame them though, if i was a permy sat in this office watching a contracter type this and he was earning 3.5 times as much as me for doing the exact same job i'd be on the sick all the time!
