If you have a mobile home, why do you need a laptop?

      Cheapskate,

I bought an Dell XPS 15, was a couple of years ago, probably something better available now.

Try Dell Factory Outlet: Error but you'll have to add the memory yourself....

Its going to be tight finding an i7 for that sort of money and you probably need that to get the cores you need for a lab..

Try a Clevo chassis from the likes of PC Specialist or Overclockers UK? Should be able to knock a spec up.....

MyCo bought a Gigabyte P35K-CF4 recently, which is a bit over budget......I would think a decent i7 (i.e. 4700 onwards) with 16GB RAM will likely be closer to £1k without the other bells, bangles and whistles.

this story may result in some good advice.

Home lab operators: Ditch your servers ... now!

favourite seems to be a mac mini (I know its not a laptop but is mobile and you can take your old laptop with you).

I have an n54 + virtualbox and its fine for a couple of VMs + tv server.

SSD makes a real difference and they are cheap now.

I've got the Sony Vaio Pro 3 Ultrabook.

128 gb SSD, 16Gb Ram, core i5 professor

Got it from John Lewis for £999 so you could probably get it cheaper if you can deal with courier stress.

Goes like the proverbial off a hovel!

I have one of those also - and I've stuck 16gb of ram in it and it works fine. Ram was about 125 delivered from Crucial.

I also bought mine out the dell outlet site about 3 years ago. It cost 540 back then for an i7 quad core

                I preferred version 1!

CAn't you get as many cores on i5 as i7, just a bit slower?

I imagine for a multi-VM-fest, 128Gb is not going to cut it.

Has Windows implemented functionality where running a Windows VM on Windows doesn't install the whole OS multiple times? I remember reading about such things but not if they are implemented or just a clever idea.

you would need a dual drive laptop, one for system and one for VMs.
