    Small car recommendations

The wife needs a new car, at 10 years old hers is becoming a PITA. She commutes about 15min each way to work and doesn't like driving a big car, plus begrudges spending so much on petrol. Currently have a Focus but with small cars so big these days, even that's bigger than she needs so we're looking more at a Fiesta or similar.

New isn't an option; we're debating between practically new or something 3-5 years old. The main reason we're looking at practically new is that a few models brought in fancy super-efficient engines and so on in the last 2-3 years.

Any recommendations on models or brands... we've both been brought up in the time when French cars were crap for instance but that was 15 years ago!

Also wondering if we should be considering diesel... neither of us owned a diesel car before.

    Current thoughts are something from:
    • Fiesta
    • Auris
    • 306/7 (whatever it is these days)
    • Mini
    • C'eed
    • Golf
Want to buy for cash (I am a contractor even if I'm buying a permie car). Budget probably £5k after trading in 2003 Focus.

    Suzuki Swift?

Don't touch diesel for short journeys.

WHS, if only 15 mins each way don't do diesel as they take while to warm up to best fuel efficiency.

I think SWift/Polo are one notch too small (same for the Fiat 500). Fiesta level seems a good compromise between small, and still comfortable for the odd longer journey.
