Hi,

I had a default on a credit card which has now been settled. I'm told it will stay on my record for 6 years. Will this affect me working in financial services?

Yes. Non payment of a credit card, dodgy overdraft, pot of coins on the side of the bed are all signs that you are bad with money and by default exclude you from working in financial services. On the plus side it does not exclude you as being the Labour shadow Exchequer.
