Self Assessment when working through an umbrella company

Hello all, i was just wondering if someone could offer some advice..

Ive just had a self assessment letter through the post and it seems that i dont fit ANY of the criteria, so im questioning whether i have to fill one out

have any of you contractors had to fill one out while working through an umbrella company?

im going to phone HMRC tomorrow and question whether i have to fill one out but if they insist i have to, should i approach my umbrella company and ask them to fill some of it out (since they know all my tax figures etc)

    thanks for your help
    Joe

Contact your umbrella and ask for their advice - they are the ones best placed to answer your question.

I know that's not particularly helpful but without any more info that's the best I can offer.

We have umbrella specialist on here, they'll be able to tell you what their contractors do.

Your umbrella company is your employer, and as such you will receive a P60 at the end of each tax year and a P45 at the end of your employment to input into your tax return.

i see, so all the tax figures ill need for the form will be available in either a p60 or p45. i thought it might be more complicated than that,.

i just find it strange im having to fill one out.

Well it depends on your circumstances and whether you have any other income. I am guessing you are probably a 40% taxpayer.

If you have any other income? Eg some savings or dividends from somewhere then as a higher rate payer there will be some tax to pay.

another reason which triggers a request is the fact that child benefit is being paid.

That's not because your money is held offshore and is just loaned to you is it?
