    Portugal land grab

Portugal 'land grab' laws: meet the families who could lose homes - Telegraph

British families could lose their homes due to draconian laws passing through parliament in Portugal

Who would be stupid enough to buy a house in Portugal?

Vote UKIP! Then they'll all lose their homes and get kicked out of the country anyway.
Will work inside IR35. Or for food.

        Your really are unfair.

If you have Portuguese heritage, like the person the story is about, you may want to own a home in two countries.

Anyway it seems the Portuguese government is up to something......

I´m trying hard to panic because I bought a house in another EU country, namely the Netherlands.

          I´m not succeeding though.

            They could try this;

EU Charter - Art 17. Right to property

            EU Charter - JUSTICE commentary

            In the public interest

The State is required to show that the deprivation of property under Article 17 is ‘in the public interest’. Specifically, the State must identify the interest in question, how the deprivation is rationally connected to it, and show that the interference is proportionate. However, it seems difficult to conceive of circumstances in which the Court would dispute the purpose alleged by the government or to contest its assertion that the measure was in the public interest.[19]

            Conditions provided for by law

‘Conditions provided by law’ means the state must have a basis in national law for its act of deprivation and that the law concerned must be both accessible and sufficiently certain. In particular, the law should contain sufficient safeguards against arbitrariness. What is required in each case will be determined by the application of the ‘fair balance’ test.

hehe those Europeans really love us Brits don't they!

What is the point of belonging to the EU if they can't stop this sort of thing?

Far better to leave it to the market. This will put people off buying in Portugal. Their housing market will suffer. The locals will complain to the Government. The Government will change its mind.

They can, at least in legal terms. They can't physically send in an army to stop the Portuguese government, but there are legal channels to challenge this and/or gain compensation.
