    D-Day 70th Anniversary This Week!

Let us never forget their sacrifice ! and how close it came :nazi:

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Normandy Landings, centred around the date of invasion, 6 June, known as “D-Day”. A series of major commemorations are planned to mark this historic occasion, with events planned in both the United Kingdom, and at various locations along the Normandy Coast.

If you would like to read a cracking book in this subject (and yes there are a plenty) then 'Bodyguard Of Lies' by Antony Cave Brown is a fascinating read.

And by many accounts it was a close run thing.

He had a negative bluety on a quackhandle and was quadraspazzed on a lifeglug.

I look forward to your all knowing and likely sarcastic and unhelpful reply.

We're having a village event on Saturday and I noticed that the place is already festooned with Union Jack bunting as I drove through yesterday morning on my way to client co.

It's a 1940s themed street party in which attendees are invited to come dressed in the apparel of the day. There will be live acts playing the popular music of the time (though I wonder if they've erased The Sun Has Got His Hat On from their repertoires).

I just hope they won't be serving wartime food. Nice bit of braun anyone?

Oh, by the way. There's plenty of serious commemoration of the events of 70 years ago going on too there's an exhibition in the Church hall and various people are coming in to the local school to give talks etc so this isn't just a glib celebration.

Should be fun though, particularly since Palmers of Bridport are running the beer tent

I always (well... not always) thought it was particularly sick how 'we' promise to never forget, while continually sending innocent young men off to be killed & maimed while trying to kill & maim other innocent young men.

No worries though... we can all go down to the local commemoration this November 9th and act all sad and sorrowful for half an hour, and then back to the killing and maiming for another year! Yeehaw!

At least it's mainly online in FPS where no one gets hurt, unless you count wounded teenagers egos when they find out they've been shanked by an oldie
Socialism is inseparably interwoven with totalitarianism and the abject worship of the state.

No Socialist Government conducting the entire life and industry of the country could afford to allow free, sharp, or violently-worded expressions of public discontent.

The BBC don't seem to know which war to promote at the moment. They just got me interested in World War I, and now we're meant to talk about World War II again.

Not forgetting the D Day Dodgers of course:

              Some audio NSFW.

Plus it ain't sung by Canadians, but there you go.

Was watching Al Murrays Road to Berlin on I think it was quest this weekend - had all of Sunday devoted to it.

Apparently we struggled to take Caen amongst other objectives.

but even so - hero's every last one of them.

Falklands was only won back by an incredibly fine margin too. I can't remember the exact number now, but when the Argentinians surrendered at Goose Green the men of 2 para had an average of something like nine rounds left each.

Did anyone see 'Britains Greatest Pilot' on BBC on the weekend? I thought it was great, derring do type stuff, plus first hand observational stuff of Adolf shaking Jesse Owen's hand and converstions with Goering in jail in Nuremberg after the war. It's being repeated tonight on BBC2 at 23.20 according to the beeb site. I would highly recommend it.

I also saw a Dan Snow thing about 'last heroes' of D-Day which wasn't a patch on this, which was a great shame.
