I have experienced first hand that if you want to get the cheapest results it is not about getting the cheapest people in. 3 other contractors were brought into this project on rates ranging between 300/day and 400/day. I have spent a lot of the last 3 months cleaning up the piles of turd that they all left behind after claiming they had completely finished the work. The lower the day rate the larger the piece of turd that was left behind to clean up. It would have been far cheaper if they had got one high calibre contractor in at £600/day than paying these 3 numpties a combined £1000/day.

God only knows the kind of turds that are in the public sector considering they pay people £200/day.

What if they'd paid 1 chancer £600/day though?

The problem is at least partly their selection process not how much they paid.

Also £400 is not a cheap day rate. Unless you're in some niche field £600/day is a LOT. Most of the best developers I've worked with have been permies on £30-40k!

indeed £400/day is not cheap but the absolute best developers (who are in fact a hell of a lot more than just developers) would cost a bit more at least.

Not necessarily. The correlation coefficient between cost and skill is not massively high Blagging and selling yourself affect rates perhaps as much as skill especially if clients don't really evaluate you - they see you charged £600/day at your last contract and assume that means you're a £600/day kind of guy
