does seem rather stingy and possibly sexist
Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much.

Isn't the point of this pension specifically to support women because their husbands died in service and cannot provide for them any longer? i.e. isn't the pension a matter of practicality rather than a "reward"?

Don't we live in the 21st century where women no longer require husbands to support them?
Will work inside IR35. Or for food.

If they were housewives from necessity because their husband was always away and was the sole breadwinner, then that's not really relevant.

Isn't it somewhat akin to a really good life assurance policy?

How does their husband being away force them to be housewives?

Sounds like the kind of thinking you'd expect from the WWI era, not today.

It's irrelevant if it's the mother or father. If you've two or more young children, a proper career is really not an easy thing to do. One parent away all the time and the other at work, trying to scrimp enough time to raise children, is not a good parenting model. So if one parent is away, the other one should raise the children.

Maybe that's a WW1 view, but if the modern view is your career comes before your children then the old view is better.

                Nobody mentioned children.

And anyway, what you say applies to any other single woman with children to bring up. Why does the war widow have it more difficult than somebody whose husband died of natural causes?

The war widow(er)'s partner gave their life in service to the country.

Another good reason for you people not to invest in a pension.
