Jaguar Land Rover to cut 1,000 jobs after 'slump due to Brexit'

Jaguar Land Rover is to cut 1,000 jobs in the west Midlands, blaming a slump in car sales due to uncertainty over Brexit and the future of diesel vehicles.

Britain’s biggest carmaker will cut 1,000 temporary contract workers at its plant in Solihull. The factory employs 10,000 workers, including 2,000 contract staff.

The company, which employs 40,000 people, will move some workers from its factory at nearby Castle Bromwich to fill gaps left by the cuts at Solihull.

The cuts are understood to have been triggered by a 26% drop in UK sales in the first three months of 2018. The company will say customers are delaying buying new cars because of concerns about the government’s policy on diesel cars. Consumer confidence had also been hit by uncertainty over Brexit.

So they could just layoff half their contractors no harm no foul, which is it really though? The uncertainty around Diesel or Brexit as the headlines mentions Brexit but the article also mentions that it could be the uncertainty around diesel vehicles. Didn't the government also increase the amount of vehicle tax last year for new vehicles as well?

Britain has increased the amount of vehicle excise duty paid by almost everyone buying a new diesel car from this month. Diesel accounts for around 90% of JLR’s UK sales.
This part isn't really due to Brexit though.

Increased diesel costs are from April 2018, drop in sales happened already before it - 'due to Brexit'.

Jeez, them Brexiters are total morons - first they were saying that company who cut jobs/move out don't do so because of Brexit, now when company explicitly says 'slump due to Brexit' they have audacity to pretend they know better

The bit that hasn't been spunked on by the Guardian

            From the horses mouth

Weaker market conditions in the UK and Europe, driven by lack of consumer confidence and lower demand for diesels, are impacting our growth. But even against this backdrop it’s good to see that we have closed our financial year with record retail sales. New models such as the award-winning Range Rover Velar continue to drive our growth. Sales of the completely refreshed 18 Model Year Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, including our PHEV option, are still ramping up. For Jaguar, sales of the new E-PACE are gathering momentum. The I-PACE, our first battery electric vehicle, is just going on sale. It is the world’s smartest five seater sports car and will entice even more customers to our showrooms.

Yes the new costs came into force in April this year but it was announced in November 2017, Diesel sales are doing very well in part due to the emissions scandal (go on link that to Brexit) and uncertainty over what the Government wants to do about Diesel cars. Given 90% of JLR's sales are diesel vehicles then it would mean any drop in people purchasing these vehicles would hit their sales hard.

Yes, and they are wrong. Brexit is really caused by poor weather two years ago, which Brexiteers blame on EU immigrants from Spain bringing their poor weather with them.
