On the plus side, Dyson appears to pay tax in the U.K., unlike many billionaires.

The billionaires who do pay their bills, including James Dyson and JK Rowling | The Independent

On the minus side, he then claims half of that back.

Don’t the Brexiters always tell us that it’s our money that we send to the EU, that then comes back? So he’s not getting money back from the EU, he’s getting it back from the U.K. taxpayer?

Hang on mate, he's not a charity. If there are rebates there to be claimed, then why not claim them?

        What does his accountant say?

On the face of it, I agree. Everyone is entitled to arrange their affairs within the letter of the law as they see fit.

Where the grey areas appear is whether he (and other wealthy people) arrange their affairs within the spirit of the law.

As contractors we do it to a certain extent (spouse as shareholder, etc) where the normal PAYE person on the street might wonder why this might be legal but not necessarily right. Same principle.

There is no such thing as "The Spirit of the law"!

And his accountants probably say "Pay us £20 million and we'll save you £100 million".

Don’t be so daft, of course there is, it’s a well-established concept.

Of course. Any good accountant will save you money. Sometimes though if it’s a non-standard scheme or setup, the question isn’t whether you could, it’s whether you should.

This is not meant to be an insult to you, but to what you have said. "Bollocks".

                That’s a well-reasoned and fully cited argument.

                    Thank you.

If I appear in court I certainly hope my Brief is more practiced in the letter of the law than its spirit.
