    Without any sense of irony

The Maybot is on a charm offensive in Europe:

The EU chief negotiator wants to “ de-dramatise” the issue by suggesting that checks on trade between mainland Britain and Northern Ireland could be conducted on ferries or in factories, not at ports in the region.

“Spot checks can take place away from the border, at the company premises or the markets,” he said on Tuesday.

He is also expected to accept that the checks should be carried out by British officials rather than a joint team of EU and UK inspectors.

But none of these suggestions would satisfy Mrs May, who wants no customs checks at all. She plans to ask EU leaders over dinner in Salzburg on Wednesday night to imagine how they would feel if their country was effectively “carved up”.
In front of the Irish Taoiseach. I’m sure he can only imagine....

Pretty sure the Catalans tried this a couple of months or so ago

The EU responded by beating up old ladies if I recall.
