Guy Verhofstadt warns Brexiteers could end up on the guillotine like the leaders of the French Revolution

Guy Verhofstadt has warned Brexiteers such as Boris Johnson and Jacob Rees-Mogg that they could suffer a similar fate to that meted out to the leaders of the French Revolution, who were executed on the guillotine.

The incendiary claim came as billionaire investor George Soros predicted on Tuesday that Eurosceptic parties could destroy the EU after making gains in May’s European Parliament elections.

Mr Soros warned that the European Union was “sleepwalking towards oblivion” and could collapse as quickly as the Soviet Union did in 1991, unless it woke the “sleeping pro-European majority” before the elections.

Well that's a fairly incendiary piece of misreporting by James Crisp and whichever editor set the headline.

The context of the comment from Verhofstadt is that there has been a bit of a joke going around within the Tory Party of Brexiters comparing themselves to the leaders of the French Revolution, and giving each other roles - Gove as Brissot, BoJo as Danton, Rees-Mogg as Robespierre, etc.

Verhofstadt simply pointed out that in the French Revolution, the efforts of those men were not appreciated by the common man, with the result that they (the French Revolutionaries in the 1700's) all ended up on the guillotine.

He's having a dig at the Tory joke and their lack of understanding of history, rather than seriously suggesting that we would be hauling out guillotines for them.

Nah. He's a bleeding heart wishy washy sandle-wearing bearded tree-hugging liberal. A quick guillotine is far to merciful.
Down with racism. Long live miscegenation!

After Brexit sterling would drop so much that whole country won’t be able to afford one of them shiny imports from France.

The guillotine was actually a British invention (Halifax Gibbet - Wikipedia)
We could buy locally if the need ever arose...
His heart is in the right place - shame we can't say the same about his brain...
