The general view is that the left it more libertarian and tolerant and therefore more tolerant of people who are on the fringes of mainstream culture.(note I do not think being gay in any form is unacceptable and anything but normal but the fact is only 3.6 % of the UK population are openly gay and there fore that group is classed as fringe)
But in addition there is often an oppression of this things associated with the right wing.
The irony of the whole thing is that while thinking the left is more tolerant they have never really taken the view of what the extreme left is - in much the same way as many people who vote tory do not see themselves as fascists because they are not.
