Did the UK have to ask the EU for permission to have a referendum?

The Scots people are sovereign and we will decide if we want to be independent without the permission of the country next door. Asking for a Section 30 order is the first part of the legal process so we would be recognised as independent by other nations. If refused we can take it to court and we will win. Westminster had a vote in the HoC last year and it passed.

We can have a referendum but we could also use elections to determine the outcome, if a majority of Pro-Independence MPs and MSPs are returned then we can declare ourselves Independent.

"That this House endorses the principles of the Claim of Right for Scotland, agreed by the Scottish Constitutional Convention in 1989 and by the Scottish Parliament in 2012, and therefore acknowledges the sovereign right of the Scottish people to determine the form of government best suited to their needs.”

I know you are used to English parties ditching their manifesto as soon as they get elected but we think they should be honoured.

The SNP Scottish Government has a clear mandate to offer the people of Scotland a choice. The SNP has won two elections – the Scottish Parliament election in 2016 and the General Election last year – with an explicit commitment in our manifesto on holding a referendum. The Scottish Parliament has also endorsed that position.

Might I remind you that you voted as part of the UK, not in isolation.

You do recall the question on the referendum paper, don't you?

"Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?"

So much for being an equal partner in a union. If one side of the union can outvote the other side then we're not a partner, we're a prisoner.

    That's all about to change

I see your mistake. The constituent countries of the UK didn't each get a vote. Individual voters got a vote.

Out of interest, did the SNP attempt to amend the referendum Bill so that a majority would be required in Scotland?

That will be your mistake. Ignoring the will of the Scottish people will see the UK break up.

We did try to amend but were outvoted as usual. We wanted an amendment that meant all 4 countries had to vote the same way before Brexit could happen.
