Brexit party's funding must be investigated, says Gordon Brown

“The Electoral Commission is under mounting pressure to launch an investigation into the funding of Nigel Farage’s Brexit party because of concerns that its donation structure could allow foreign interference in British democracy.

Before Thursday’s crucial European elections, Gordon Brown has written to the Electoral Commission calling on it to urgently examine whether the party has sufficient safeguards on its website to prevent the contribution of “dirty money”.

The former Labour prime minister will use a speech in Glasgow on Monday to say an investigation into the Brexit party’s finances is urgent and essential.”

“The warnings come at a time of more questions about the Brexit party’s links to a disgraced former aide to Farage who was imprisoned in the US after being caught offering money laundering services to undercover federal agents. George Cottrell was with Farage when he was arrested at Chicago O’Hare airport in July 2016. He had been working in Farage’s office and claimed on his LinkedIn account to have co-directed Ukip’s EU referendum campaign fundraising.

He was charged with 21 counts including money laundering, wire fraud, blackmail and extortion. He would later plead guilty to participating in a scheme to “advertise money laundering services on a Tor network black market website” and served eight months in prison.“

Have you ever stopped to think why this might be happening now? Do you think its because the major parties are being trashed in the polls and they cannot fight him on policy so the attack by putting pressure on the electoral commission to rule the party null and void. This is fine if you want nothing but a two party system, in fact why don't we go the whole hog and take up the Russian system of a one party system then all these arguments about party funding will disappear. Lets just have the Labour Momentum party as the only party on the ballot paper.

This is nothing new, the major parties have always attacked each other based around funding. But you carry on playing the victim card for the cult of Farage a party that has no policies other than blaming the e.u. for all that is wrong in the u.k. yet feeds off peoples discontent with the current system. Nothing ever went wrong with such a populist action; ever.

Farage has set up a system that facilitates illegal Russian (and other) donations (by allowing multiple anonymous payments of £500). Are you deflecting from this with your ridiculous strawman about only having Labour on the ballot paper?

No he's set up a legally valid system, why should he do other? If the other parties want to accept money in the same way up to £500 from donors they can. So perhaps if they don't like it they can get the law changed to demand full disclosure for all donations but until then this is just blowing smoke.

Because £500 * 1000 would be allowed as an anonymous donation with their implementation from a single source. They have deliberately not enforced any sort of integrity check to stop this happening.

Knowingly entering into or furthering an arrangement to facilitate making an impermissible donation would not be legal. Don't you agree that the Electoral Commission should investigate whether the Brexit Party has set up a system to facilitate impermissible donors to anonymously split a donation into payments of £500?
